What We Have Done
Our team has done an extensive evaluation of the existing stormwater system in the Bluefield neighborhood. This research and data will help us design a modified solution that will help reduce the flooding in resident's yards.

We have:
-
Researched past floods in the neighborhood
-
Created reports of the ephermeral stream and Bluestone River
-
Researched precipitation data for the region around known dates of floods
-
Researched stormwater management solutions

-
Conducted multiple sites visits to the neighborhood
-
Surveyed the neighborhood to determine elevations of stormwater grates, and pipe inlets and outlets, and the system outlet into the Bluestone River

See our VT news video and photos here!

-
Developed ideas for possible solutions based on our data and literature
-
Analyzed possible solutions using decision matrices

-
Contacted engineers in the Town of Bluefield for access to existing plans

Next Steps
Next steps for the project are to create a stormwater model using EPA SWMM. The EPA SWMM model is a tool used to quantify our observations. We will input precipitation data, stream data, and our point elevations into to run a storm scenario. We are using this to see if te final pipe outlet into the Bluestone River is the primary cause of flooding for this neighborhood. This model will either confirm our predictions or lead us to revaluate our potential solutions.
Final Deliverables
The final design of this system will be based on the results of the SWMM model as described above. Our final deliverable will be a drawing, likely in AutoCAD software, that illustrates and describes our design specifications in a way that is comprehensible for construction.
